Hey Brenda
I know you are very excited about going to Rhodes; you just can’t wait to get started on your future career and to meet your perfect husband. I know your uncle has been warning you about the Smuts boys and telling you how you must stay the good girl you are. But everyone has forgotten to tell you what this freedom will do to you.
When you get to Rhodes you will miss home the minute your mom leaves you, you will lock yourself in your room and cry until you can not cry anymore. That’s when it hits you, varsity life is not really all fun and games and being away from family and everything you are familiar with is not so much of an exciting adventure, rather a scary and painful one. When you start to miss that annoying little brother of yours, then you know it’s over.
Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of fun to be had. Plenty of events and parties to go to and since its Rhodes there is plenty of alcohol. But you will soon discover that nothing beats mom’s chicken on Sunday afternoons after church. The privilege of having your room cleaned for you, your clothes washed and ironed for you are out the window now my dear friend. Mom is not here to check on your homework either and frankly no one cares whether or not you do your work. Oh yeah leaving your dishes unwashed for two weeks is not such a great idea, you will have to deal with them sooner or later preferably sooner before you have creatures creeping up from under your bed.
PS. The warnings about the Smuts boys are actually true, they will be out to get you so you must be quick and just outplay them.
Lotsa love

Dear not yet 18
I’m writing to warn you of a scary and unnatural force that may destroy you and no I am not talking about monsters that live on the hill, or lecturers who are vampires or (dare I say it) communal bathrooms. I’m talking about first year spread a force so diabolical you won’t know what has happened until it’s too late.
I know that at this time in your life you fit comfortably into a size 10 and aren’t afraid to give passers by a jolly wave. I remember the days when you used to eat anything and everything, including in your younger years objects I will not mention. That my friend is about to change, the allure of chocolates, ice-cream and coke will be too much for your older body. Therefore I’ve decided to impart onto you some gems of wisdom to protect you from first year spread. Firstly doing your own shopping does not mean you can reward yourself with a slab of chocolate. Secondly just because someone in the Dinning Hall does not want their pudding does not mean you need to take it off their hands, because there are starving people in Ethiopia. Lastly, walking to the shops to get a coke does not count as exercise. I do believe that covers some important aspects of first year spread.
Ultimately my friend, it is your life and I know despite my warnings you are going to do what you want. I believe one of your favourite sayings is appropriate at this moment in time and that is “you only live once, eat to your fullest”.
All the best and keep in touch my younger self, I will miss you.
Peace and love
Kirstin
