Letter to little W

Dear Young Wandi
Wow! It’s surprising to see how things change, not so long ago you were in Johannesburg, Soweto, considered by some to be one of the worst areas neighbourhoods in South Africa and now you’re in the Eastern cape, about a 14 hour bus trip from home and your very protective mother. Remember when you were doing your bridging course at Varsity College Sandton you dreamt of being a music journalist and one day changing the world of Music through your writing. Okay I will admit the fact that you had to upgrade your matric marks to get into Rhodes was not an ideal situation at all man, but I knew you would make it to Rhodes at some point you’ve always been so passionate about your writing, so it came as no surprise to me when you chose journalism and English as your majors. Im sure you’ve noticed, varsity life can get confusing man, all the freedom, all the parties all the work, and in your case, most importantly all the ladies, it’s very difficult to strike the balance man but hey your there now so your need to focus. The studies over there must be killing you, but I mean the media world is a very complex one and understanding it fully is not something you can be expected to grasp quickly but im sure you’ll study hard much. The women at varsity, well I wish someone had told you this before but they are of a different class, very smart and beautiful, but don’t be ignorant, always stay alert. Apparently your running the club and party scene well you know what its varsity enjoy it, just not too much and remember whatever your doing do it safely. I wish we could have chatted about this earlier but better late than never right?
Sincerely yours Wandile Mdluli
