Hey Brenda
I know you are very excited about going to Rhodes; you just can’t wait to get started on your future career and to meet your perfect husband. I know your uncle has been warning you about the Smuts boys and telling you how you must stay the good girl you are. But everyone has forgotten to tell you what this freedom will do to you.
When you get to Rhodes you will miss home the minute your mom leaves you, you will lock yourself in your room and cry until you can not cry anymore. That’s when it hits you, varsity life is not really all fun and games and being away from family and everything you are familiar with is not so much of an exciting adventure, rather a scary and painful one. When you start to miss that annoying little brother of yours, then you know it’s over.
Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of fun to be had. Plenty of events and parties to go to and since its Rhodes there is plenty of alcohol. But you will soon discover that nothing beats mom’s chicken on Sunday afternoons after church. The privilege of having your room cleaned for you, your clothes washed and ironed for you are out the window now my dear friend. Mom is not here to check on your homework either and frankly no one cares whether or not you do your work. Oh yeah leaving your dishes unwashed for two weeks is not such a great idea, you will have to deal with them sooner or later preferably sooner before you have creatures creeping up from under your bed.
PS. The warnings about the Smuts boys are actually true, they will be out to get you so you must be quick and just outplay them.
Lotsa love
B

Haha nice one Brenda :)
Wow what a deep, meaningful entry. It's important to remember that not everyone is the same, so,me people are glad to be away from home, and are having a nice time here at Rhodes. And contrary to the thoughts of the author, not all smuts boys are the same, have you ever thought that it could be the circles you hang around in that attract those specific kind of Smuts boys. Do not judge an entire res because of your experience with a handful of them. I think that this post gets the message across, however do not jump to conclusions and assumptions based on what people have done to you, everyone is different.
Well done on an insightful and interesting blogpost. It is very similar to mine, in that I also speak of the realities of University life away from home and the difficulties that are faced. I don’t speak of homesickness too much, but I do speak of how one should appreciate your parents while they are still around, as “freedom” is not as rosy as it seems – one now has to take responsibility of oneself, which is possibly the hardest lesson to learn. I could relate to this in your post where you mention that leaving dishes unwashed is a bad idea. Thank you for your blog post as I could relate to it entirely.
